Gamescom 2025: A Personal Journey into a Quantum Universe
By Spencer Topel, CTO at MOTH
As both a lifelong artist and a technologist, I've always been driven by the same question: how can we use technology to reveal new forms of creative expression? My work as a composer and engineer has taught me that true innovation happens at the intersection of these two disciplines. At MOTH, this passion is the very heart of our mission.
For years, I've felt the constraints of classical computing in my own creative work. While powerful, it often struggles to deliver genuine novelty, leaving us with a sense of déjà vu. I believe the path to unlocking a new creative frontier lies in quantum computing. It's a technology that, in its very nature, generates the kind of dynamic, non-linear possibilities that artists crave.
This year at Gamescom 2025, I am immensely proud to share a key milestone on this journey: the public debut of Space Moths. This is a first-of-its-kind demo that proves quantum computers are not just lab-bound experiments—they are usable today. We are showcasing a live, massively multiplayer online experience where every piece of procedural content is generated in real-time by on-demand quantum computing.
This is the game generation premiere of our Archaeo platform, which expands the same quantum generative AI technology that powered our previous success with generative music for the ILĀ RECURSE Infinite Mix, which debuted earlier this year to much critical acclaim. With this iteration of our platform, we are demonstrating how our quantum backend can provide continuous on-demand quantum computing for a game engine, generating truly unique universes where no two players will ever have the same experience. This is the realization of a personal vision: to use the unique properties of quantum dynamics to create immersive worlds that feel genuinely alive.
The Space Moths Roblox demo is more than a game; it is a live benchmark for the creative industries. It serves as a proof point of our ability to deliver on our promise of scalable, impactful quantum solutions to the media and entertainment industries. This is one of many exciting and diverse creative applications we have in the works for the next several years.
This is a personal and professional triumph for me and the entire MOTH team and our at the indie game design collaborators Onward Studios. It is the culmination of years of work to move quantum technology beyond theory and into the hands of creators. I invite you to join us at Gamescom and experience this groundbreaking moment. Come and see for yourself how we are building the future of media, one quantum-generated universe at a time.
